Who should be registered on a certificate?

According to the Registration of Births, Deaths, Marriages and Relationships Act 1995 (Act), all births (both live and stillbirths) in New Zealand must be registered, with the exception of miscarriages.

Can I use the certificate as an identification document?

The New Zealand certificate is an official document that contains recorded information about a person's birth. It should not be used as the sole evidence to establish a person's identity.

Where should I apply to change the sex registered on your certificate?

You must apply to the Family Court. The Family Court will make a legal declaration about your designated sex. The Court will notify Births, Deaths and Marriages.

What happens if there is a mistake on my Certificate?

If there is an error on your certificate, contact Births, Deaths and Marriages. They will give you a solution. You may have to pay for a replacement certificate.
